Greek Festival Community Service Event
On May 14th – May 17th, our cadets helped out at Norfolk’s “Greek Festival”, which was held at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral. The Norfolk Greek Festival is Hampton Roads’ oldest and largest ethnic festival, celebrating heritage with authentic Greek food, live music, traditional dancing, and cathedral tours. These few cadets helped serve food, clean up trash, and guide guests around the event for several hours. Although the volunteering was rigorous at times, these cadets worked as hard as possible to make sure the community was outstandingly served. During this event, our cadets set the example for hard work and dedication. Not only did they set an example for others, but they also gave back to the community around them.

End of Year/ Change of Command Ceremony
Granby’s NJROTC Unit had their Change of Command ceremony on May 6th. In this ceremony, cadets find out the final results from their long lasting competition during the end of the year, also known as “Comet Crucible.” In this competition each class is presented with tasks such as drill, armed/unarmed exhibition, personnel inspection, and more. They are expected to do an outstanding job to represent their class and compete against other classes. One outstanding class was awarded Honor Platoon and has been greatly recognized by their parents and peers for their achievement. Cadets within the unit are also acknowledged and awarded for their achievements within the unit such as academics, athletics, leadership, and personnel inspection. In addition to this event, the new Commanding Officer, C/ENS Thornton, took charge of the unit and introduced the new unit staff for the 2026-2027 school year as the old Commanding Officer C/LT Estes resigned. Many seniors that have completed all four years of NJROTC were also recognized along with the resigning Commanding Officer. Although this event ultimately wraps up the year, it is not only a Change of Command ceremony, it is an acknowledgement and appreciation for every cadet that takes pride in the unit and it represents a large shift to ultimately make the unit stronger.
